Workshops for Teachers
Why Integrate the Arts and Technology With Literacy?
Accomplished teachers use the arts and technology to develop students’ critical thinking through engaging activities.
“Listening and speaking are the original modes of language acquisition and development.
Teachers structure learning activities to promote students’ playful discovery of language.
Teachers provide opportunities for self-expression and peer interaction, and they help students engage in meaningful discussion.
They provide opportunities for students to develop higher level thinking skills as they listen for specific purposes.”

All workshops provide Continuing Education Units with the approval of the local school system. Janice collaborates with administrators to provide necessary documentation. Workshops may be combined in order to provide the ten contact hours needed for one CEU. More information about Janice.
“Folktale Festival” Teacher Training (10 hours)
In a week-long residency, Janice leads students and teachers through story exercises and games based on folktales that increase proficiency with story structure, creativity, and vocabulary. Students learn to retell a favorite story using character voices and gestures.
Story Time (8 hours)
Teachers learn the importance of oral reading and oral narrative for all age groups. Teachers explore creative ways to energize oral reading and storytelling. They learn strategies for dramatization and creative movement that extend and personalize the story.
Puppet Time (4 hours)
Puppets provide a powerful means for conveying ideas, teaching content in all subjects, and enabling students to communicate what they have learned. Puppets develop students’ imagination and creative expression. In this workshop teachers learn how to make and use a variety of inexpensive puppets. Centers provide possibilities for creativity and imaginative play that takes learning well beyond the scope of textbooks and workbooks.
Digital Storytelling (4 hours)
Teachers explore inexpensive ways to publish stories and PSA's using digital technology. Modes of publication include: movies, Voice Threads, podcasts, and hardbound books. Janice shares ideas for managing projects, materials, and student behavior.
