Why Tell Stories to Young Children?

A Pre-School Storytelling Performance:

  • Promotes growth in listening skills and the use of oral language.

  • Models a variety of literary forms including stories, poems, rhymes, and songs.

  • Provides an opportunity for children to tell and retell stories in logical order.

  • Develops oral language by engaging children in oral dramatic activities.

  • Models oral communication skills used to share stories orally with an audience.

  • Teaches audience manners and respectful listening.

Janice Davin presents age-appropriate programs for three year olds, four year olds, and transitional kindergarten students. With more than 40 years of experience as an educator, Janice knows how to engage very young children in exciting and educationally sound activities. Using puppets to catch and sustain attention, Janice creates a magical world as she narrates simple but powerful tales.

Children actively participate by learning and reciting rhymes and songs, performing fingerplays, moving to music, and using rhythm instruments. They use simple puppets and props to retell the story. Janice leads children in creative movement and games that amplify the story.

Janice’s programs appeal to young children and their teachers. Teachers learn new strategies as they watch Janice model effective techniques for gaining the attention of her audience, transitioning from one activity to another, and introducing new activities.

Janice also presents programs for teachers. See Workshops For Teachers.
